Description:

Turnera Diffusa is a shrub that grows up to 2 metres tall, and has a woody, heavily branched stem. Leaves are pale green with hairy ribs. It bears small yellow flowers and inconspicuous fruits in a rough, three-chambered shell. It has an ancient reputation as an aphrodisiac.

Damiana is the above-ground part of the plant (Turnera Diffusa) that grows from Argentina to Southern California. The first part of the name derives from William Turner (1508-1568), the father of English botany. Diffusa means 'spreading' which refers to the strong expanding habit of the plant. In Latin, Damiana means 'Tamer' or 'Deen tame', which is a reference to the soothing effect of the herb.

Damiana is a relatively small, woody shrub that produces small, aromatic flowers. It blossoms in early to late summer and is followed by fruits that taste similar to figs. The shrub is said to have a strong spice-like odour somewhat like chamomile due to the essential oils present in the plant. Mature stems of T. diffusa are woody, with small, grey-green leaves 13 to 16 mm long, 4.5 to 5.5 mm wide, obtuse at the apex, and strongly aromatic when crushed.
