Description:
The people of the Amazon value this very special plant as a healer and Master Plant Teacher. Traditionally, Psychotria Viridis is used by the medicine healers and shamans of South and Central America, and these people have used it as a cure for a wide range of illnesses for thousands of years.
Psychotria viridis is found naturally in the Amazonian lowlands, but is also cultivated throughout the northern parts of South America and much of Central America. It is an evergreen tropical tree, or large shrub of the Rubiaceae family, that grows in both full sun and half shade. Its natural habitat is wet, lowland tropical forests and it is most commonly found in Amazonian Peru and Bolivia. It is a relative of the coffee plant.
The plant grows to a height of approximately five metres and its leaves are typically 5-15cm, elliptic in shape and with a paper-like texture. When dried the leaves become greyish to reddish brown. It also produces inflorescent flowers, which turn into a red fruit.
Psychotria viridis can be confused with other plants of similar genus, including Psychotria alba and Psychotria carthagenesis. They look similar to Psychotria viridis and shamans who work with the traditional healing techniques commonly used by all of these plants. All three have very similar healing effects.
