It belongs to the family Rubiaceae, which is the same family as coffee. Rubiaceae is a large family of flowering plants. The leaves are typically harvested by hand from mature trees. After harvesting, the leaves are dried either indoors or outdoors, depending on local practices and climate conditions. Once dried, the leaves can be crushed into powder or left whole for use. Kratom is available in various strains and varieties, which can differ in terms of leaf color and vein color.
