Dilopterys cabrarena or Chaliponga has similar properties as Psychotria Viridis, which is more commonly used by the indigenous communities of Peru and Bolivia, while Cabrerana is more common in Ecuador and Colombia. In some parts of Ecuador it is also known as Chacruna, although that name is more often used for Psychotria Viridis. This tropical vine is native to the Amazon Basin (Ecuador, Peru, Brazil and Colombia). It is commonly cultivated but also grows wild in the forest.

The Diplopterys Cabrerana vine has oval shaped leaves, very glossy and waxy and when held up to the light, they shine and are very similar to those of the Banisteriopsis Caapi vine, but are slightly larger in size. Diplopterys cabrerana grows in Amazonian lowlands, and the plant has been collected only in southern Colombia and Venezuela, eastern Ecuador, northern Perú and western Brazil. Like B. caapi, D. cabrerana rarely flowers.

This vine was first named Banisteria rusbyana in honour of Henry Hurd Rusby (1855–1940), one of the pioneers of ethnobotany. The confusion surrounding the botanical identity of the plant was not clarified until 1982.
